8 popular pregnancy myths

Since you are pregnant, you are sure to receive a lot of valuable advice and recommendations from your relatives and friends. Many of them are about things you should not do and what you should watch out for. It turns out that most of the advice about pregnancy are common myths that have nothing to do with the truth. Learn about 8 popular myths about pregnancy!

1. based on the shape of the gestational belly, the sex of the baby can be determined

One of the most popular myths related to pregnancy is the belief that if you have a pointy belly you will give birth to a girl, and if it is round you will give birth to a boy. This is, of course, a common superstition. The shape of your belly is in no way affected by the sex of the developing baby. Its appearance, as well as its height, depends primarily on the tension of the muscles of the abdomen and uterus, as well as the position in which the baby is at the current moment.

2. sex during pregnancy can harm the unborn baby

This is another of the 8 popular myths about pregnancy. Sex does not harm the unborn baby, so you do not have to give it up while pregnant. Of course, we are talking about the situation when your pregnancy is going well and you are not at risk of premature birth. However, if you are at risk or have other health ailments, you will certainly have to give up sex at this time. Of course, such a decision should be consulted in advance with your doctor, who should dispel all your doubts about sex during pregnancy.

3. hair must not be dyed or cut during pregnancy

This is a myth that has been circulating among moms-to-be since the days of our grandmothers. You can, and should, take care of your hair during pregnancy, just as you did before pregnancy. Cutting and coloring are not a threat to you or the baby.

If you are determined to color, I recommend choosing an ammonia-free dye. These are safe hair coloring preparations that are available in all hair salons. They work more gently than traditional dyes, plus they have a much more pleasant smell.

4. flying is not allowed during pregnancy

There are no contraindications to air travel during pregnancy. Of course, I’m talking about the situation if your pregnancy is going well. If you are in the group of moms at risk of preterm labor, unfortunately, you should refrain from flying until you give birth. If you’re not sure if you should fly, make an appointment with your pregnancy doctor before you plan to fly.

When you are heavily pregnant, it may instead happen that the airline may refuse to sell you a ticket. The reason is the usual fear that you will go into labor on board the flight. These are, of course, very exceptional situations. As a rule, pregnant women can travel by air without any problems.

5. traveling by car while pregnant, you don’t have to wear a seat belt

It’s a myth that many moms don’t wear seat belts when traveling in the car. This is very dangerous. You should always wear a seatbelt when traveling in the car, and when you are pregnant you must remember this in particular. Then you care not only for your safety, but also for your unborn baby. In a collision or harsh braking situation, if you are not buckled up, you can get a sudden impact on your belly. This is much more dangerous than belt compression.

When traveling by car, you can get a special belt adapter for pregnant women. If you do not have one, try to fasten the belts properly. The most important thing is their correct positioning. You need to place the lower section of the belt under the abdomen on the pelvic bone, and the upper section between the breasts along the abdomen.

6. drinking alcohol during pregnancy in small amounts will not harm you

I do not know the safe amount of alcohol that a pregnant woman can drink, because there are no studies to prove it. But it is true that alcohol permeates your blood and that of the baby and can lead to serious and permanent developmental disorders in the little one. You should also know that alcohol in the baby’s blood lasts twice as long as in yours. Perhaps a glass of wine or a small beer won’t hurt him, but why risk it? Instead of alcohol, drink freshly squeezed juice. It is definitely much healthier.

7. USG is harmful to the developing fetus

There is no scientific evidence that ultrasound is dangerous to the fetus. The ultrasound machine does not use radiation, but only sends out high-frequency ultrasound waves. These are completely safe for your little one.
Typically, an ultrasound should be performed three times during pregnancy. Of course, there are times when it needs to be performed more often. However, you should not worry about this. You can have an ultrasound as often as necessary.

During pregnancy, you should choose the sleeping position in which you are most comfortable. As long as your belly is small it doesn’t matter whether it’s the right or left side, on your stomach or on your back. Only when it gets bigger will you feel that it is much more difficult to lie on your back. This is because in this position the abdomen presses hard on the pelvis and it will just be hard and uncomfortable for you. In such a situation, it is better to choose a position for sleeping on the side – right or left. I recommend getting a special pillow for pregnant women then. It brought me great relief, especially in the last weeks before delivery.

High comfort during sleep will also provide you with the most comfortable pregnancy pajamas🙂
